As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu llāhi wa-barakātuhu,
Recent world events have reminded us that while most people are right-minded and well-intentioned, systems of oppression still exist and there are still a small pocket of people who thrive on the mistreatment of minorities. When that happens, it is the role of those right-minded, well-intentioned people to step forward, unite and correct the mistreatment all the way down to the root cause.
Many have seen the video. George Floyd asked for mercy. He was horrifically denied, and his life was taken in an unacceptable manner for which there must be accountability - individually and systemically. George Floyd, and other Black people who have met a similar fate, must not be forgotten. Their memories must live on through our collective action in ensuring that no other Black lives are lost in a similar fashion. Let this be our call to action. Let this be our call to unity, equality and piety.
Let us never forget the words of the Prophet Muhammed, "... a white person has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over white except by piety and good action." It is important that we refocus on this guidance towards piety and good action, as it will be the actions of right minded individuals of all faiths and races working together that will shine a disinfecting light on the darkness of racism and prejudice. Our hearts are with George Floyd, his family and all Black people who have suffered such horrific discrimination.
